Josef Smistik

Josef Smistik (28 November 1905 – 28 November 1985) was an Austrian football player and manager.
He played mainly for SK Rapid Wien.
He was captain of the Austrian Wunderteam.

Career.

He started at ESV Stadlau.
In 1926 he moved to SK Rapid Wien.
In his first season, Pepi Smistik was able to win the ÖFB Cup and reach the final of the Mitropapokal, the forerunner of the European Cup.
1937 the Rapid captain also left his club, and went back back to his youth club FC Stadlau.
After that he played for Kremser SC as a player-coach.

Manager and time after football.

After the Second World War he was only coach.
He managed the Swiss club FC Schaffhausen (1952-1955) in the top division.
In the 1958/59 season he looked after Wiener Austria as section manager.
Towards the end of his life he suffered from Parkinson's disease.
On his 80th birthday he died after a stroke in the Lainz hospital.
Smistik was buried in the Stadlauer Friedhof.
